Back in February 1968, an Indian Air Force AN-12 transport aircraft carrying 102 personnel vanished into a blizzard in these exact mountains while flying to Leh. For decades, the crash site remained swallowed by the snow and ice near the Dhaka Glacier. It wasn’t until decades later that search expeditions began recovering the remains of those bravehearts from the frozen terrain.
Standing here in front of the “अमर जवान” (Amar Jawan) marble plaque and reading the names on the “BRAVEHEARTS” headstones, the hostile atmosphere takes on a whole new weight.
